Macron announces the restoration of military service in France: details of the new program.
According to ТСН: French President Emmanuel Macron announced the restoration of military service, which is related to the risks of a new armed conflict in Europe due to aggression from Russia.
The program, aimed at increasing the number of the French army, was presented by Macron during his visit to the infantry brigade based in the French Alps.
Program details
Military service will be gradually implemented, starting from the summer of 2026. It will be voluntary, and young people aged 18-19 will serve for 10 months.
“Volunteers will receive at least 800 euros per month”
In 2024, the number of volunteers will be limited to 3,000, but by 2035, it is planned to reach 50,000 individuals. The return of mandatory conscription, which was abolished in 1996, is not planned. Service will take place only on the territory of France; young people will not be sent on military operations abroad.
Status of military service in France
Currently, France has about 200,000 professional soldiers and 47,000 reservists. This program will create a three-tier structure: professionals, reservists, and volunteers, which will help France meet the level of other European countries that have implemented or maintained military service in response to threats from Russia.
- Belgium and the Netherlands have implemented voluntary military service.
- Germany plans something similar.
- Lithuania and Latvia have mandatory service schemes.
- Sweden, a new NATO member, has military service lasting 9-15 months, with selection based on merit.
French military officials support this initiative, believing that it will create a pool of personnel ready to support the army and perform tasks beyond the front line. There is hope that many volunteers will eventually continue their military careers.
“Willingness to deploy ground forces in Ukraine within security guarantees as early as 2026”
The restoration of military service in France indicates serious challenges facing European security. The program that has gained momentum could be an important step in strengthening the country's defense capabilities, highlighting France's readiness to respond to new threats.
It is expected that these changes will not only improve the professional level of the army but also stimulate public interest in service, which could positively impact the military careers of young French people.
