According to ТСН: Greenland's opposition leader Pele Broberg called on the island's government to start direct negotiations with Washington without Denmark's involvement. This statement came against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's efforts to establish control over the strategically important Arctic island.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, where Copenhagen is responsible for foreign and defense policy. Broberg, the head of the Naleraq party, emphasized that Denmark's mediation only complicates relations between Greenland and the USA. Although his party is not part of the ruling coalition, it has significant voter support and advocates for full independence for the island.

The opposition party proposes discussing the conclusion of a 'free association' agreement, under which Greenland would receive military and financial assistance from the USA in exchange for strategic rights, without officially joining the USA.

Greenland's Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt noted that direct negotiations without involving Denmark are legally impossible. She emphasized that the government is obliged to adhere to the laws of the kingdom and the rules for resolving common issues. At the same time, she expressed hope for improved relations during an upcoming meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Washington seeks control over Greenland due to its strategic location for the USA's missile defense system and its rich mineral resources. This raises concerns in Europe. Kaja Kallas, the head of EU foreign policy, noted that the bloc is considering options for responding to potential US actions regarding the acquisition of the island. NATO ambassadors in Brussels have already agreed on the need to strengthen security in the Arctic and enhance presence in the region.

The situation in the Trump administration remains ambiguous: Secretary of State Rubio is trying to maintain a diplomatic course, while Vice President JD Vance emphasizes the White House's determination. In an interview with Fox News, he stated that the president is ready to do whatever it takes to protect US interests in the region.

What is known about the situation in Greenland

After the military operation in Venezuela, Donald Trump stated that he 'really needs Greenland' as the island is strategically important for the defense of the USA, surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships.

In turn, Denmark, which owns the island, condemned Trump's new statements. The country's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that the USA has no right to annex any of the countries of the Danish Kingdom.

Trump pointed out that US interest in Greenland is solely related to national security, not to the extraction of natural resources.

However, Greenland already belongs to Denmark, and most Greenlanders do not want to be part of the USA. Europeans are also concerned that this strategy resembles the imperial approaches of Vladimir Putin.

The situation surrounding Greenland draws the attention not only of politicians but also of analysts in international relations. In particular, US actions may impact the geopolitical balance in the region, raising questions about sovereignty and security for autonomous territories. It is important to adhere to international standards in relations between states to avoid potential conflicts in the future.
