High losses of Russian invaders on the front in Ukraine

In January 2025, Russian invaders suffered significant losses on the front in Ukraine, but their advance has considerably slowed down compared to the previous period. This was reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

On February 3, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that Russian troops lost 48,240 personnel in January, which is approximately three motorized rifle divisions.

Thus, January became the second month with the highest number of losses since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 - stated in the report.

According to ISW, Russian forces captured approximately 498 km² of territory in January in Ukraine and the Kursk region, or about 16.1 km² per day. The information shows that for every square kilometer of captured territory, there were approximately 96 losses of Russian forces.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that in December 2024, Russian troops suffered 48,670 losses, which is the highest number of monthly losses since the beginning of the full-scale invasion by Russia.

ISW experts also calculated that Russian troops occupied a total of 593 km² in populated areas in December 2024.

Russia's advance was slower from November to December 2024. Previously, ISW noted that Russian military command intentionally increased personnel losses from September 2024 to November 2024 to achieve greater territorial conquest. However, it remains unclear whether Russian command will be willing to incur such losses if the pace of their troops' advance continues to decrease, as Russian forces attack more heavily defended populated areas, such as Pokrovsk - noted in the report.

Let us remind you that the full-scale war has reached its 1077th day.

Russian invaders conducted 70 airstrikes using 106 guided aerial bombs. Additionally, Russian forces deployed 833 kamikaze drones and carried out 4,767 shelling of our troops' positions and populated areas.

A total of 94 combat clashes occurred since the beginning of the previous day. Ukrainian defenders continue to decisively repel attempts by the enemy to advance deep into our territory, inflicting effective fire damage on them and exhausting them along the entire front line.
