Russian aggression: damages to Ukraine's ecosystem

The damage to Ukraine's ecosystem from the aggression of the Russian Federation in the amount of 65 billion dollars was reported by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

He noted that the conflict with Russia has led to the damage of a third of Ukrainian forests and 20% of protected areas. Also, 35% of Europe's biodiversity, which belongs to Ukraine, is under threat. This is reported by FREEДОМ.

In addition, due to the blowing up of the Kakhovska HPP by Russian military, approximately 10,000 hectares of internationally significant wetlands were destroyed. Also, a quarter of Ukraine's territory is mined, causing significant damage.

"How many years will it take to overcome the consequences? In France, after the end of the First World War 106 years ago, 1,200 sq. km was designated as polluted due to hostilities. And to this day, any activity, including livestock grazing, is prohibited there. In Ukraine, the territory potentially contaminated with mines and shells is about 140 thousand sq. km. Thus, the Ukrainian scale is dozens and dozens of times larger," emphasized Shmyhal.
