Tragedy in the Transcarpathian Mountains

According to TSN.ua: The body of Oleksiy Khodakov, an associate professor from the Odesa National Technological University, has been discovered in the forested area of the Turbat tract in the Transcarpathian region. The academic had been missing since late February 2023 after embarking on a hiking trip in the Carpathian Mountains. His remains were found near Mount Matiyaska in the Tyachiv district. The Carpathian range, while beautiful, presents significant hazards for unprepared hikers, especially during the winter months.

Oleksiy Khodakov arrived in the Transcarpathian region on February 14, 2023, and began his route from Drahobrat. His last recorded online activity was on the evening of February 17, 2023, indicating he was active until shortly before his disappearance. This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers present in the region during winter. For instance, in January 2022, four tourists from Odesa got lost near Mount Petros, and in December 2021, three men disappeared while snowmobiling, one of whom was later found dead.

Safety Concerns for Winter Hiking

The identity of the deceased has been confirmed, as announced by Vitaliy Hlahola. The discovery of Khodakov's body has raised concerns among the hiking community and local residents, highlighting the inherent dangers of winter mountain expeditions. Authorities and rescue services are urging extreme caution for those traveling in the mountains, particularly during the winter season when the risk of becoming disoriented is substantially higher.

“This case once again underscores the risks associated with winter hiking in the mountains, especially under conditions of limited visibility and severe weather.” - Vitaliy Hlahola

It is crucial for hikers to be well-informed about safe routes and to strictly adhere to the guidelines provided by rescue services. Officials are calling for heightened vigilance to prevent further tragedies in the mountainous regions.
