A Hidden, Unfinished Metro Station in Kyiv Has Been Discovered—Here’s How It’s Used Today.
The 'Zahorivska' Metro Station
According to Novyny.live: Located between the 'Dorohozhychi' and 'Lukyanivska' stops, Kyiv’s unfinished 'Zahorivska' station (formerly named after Herzen) sits hidden beneath the city. Construction began in the mid-1990s, shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union, with plans to open it at the same time as the neighboring 'Dorohozhychi' station. However, the project was halted due to the severe economic crisis that gripped the country during that period.
Today, the station remains incomplete, lacking both a passenger hall and an entrance vestibule. Only a ventilation shaft exists at the site. Inside the tunnel, a metal platform and a few technical components have been installed. This platform is used exclusively for emergency evacuations and maintenance operations by metro staff.
Challenges and Potential
The unfinished 'Zahorivska' station is part of the Syretsko-Pecherska metro line. Its abandoned state highlights the infrastructure difficulties Kyiv faced after the Soviet Union dissolved. This issue remains pressing, as completing the station could significantly ease the capital’s transportation challenges.
Finishing 'Zahorivska' would represent a major step forward for Kyiv’s transport network, which is under constant strain from population growth and increasing car traffic. Reviving the project could also improve public transit access for residents in outlying districts. Given these factors, the question of completing the station stays on the agenda—not only for city officials but also for the public, who are eager to see the capital’s transit system improved.
