Kyiv Identifies Space for 50 New Shelters: Underground Sites Set for Conversion.
Expanding Shelter Infrastructure in Kyiv
According to Novyny.live: Kyiv has the capacity to grow its network of protective structures by utilizing underground areas, where at least 50 additional shelter locations could be established. This announcement came from Kyrylo Fesyk, head of the Obolon District State Administration, during a broadcast on 'Kyiv Time'. The city holds a substantial reserve of subterranean spaces that could serve as protective facilities.
However, Ukraine currently lacks a legal framework to repurpose privately owned spaces within residential apartment buildings as shelters. This gap must be addressed to improve public protection amid heightened security risks. Resolving this issue is critical for optimizing civilian safety.
Separately, the Kyiv City Council approved a plan to secure a €150 million loan for purchasing 50 new metro cars. This move underscores the city's dual focus on upgrading transit infrastructure while also enhancing safety measures for residents.
'At least 50 such locations still exist in the capital,' Kyrylo Fesyk stated, emphasizing the urgency of broadening the shelter network across Kyiv.
Expanding Kyiv's shelter system is a vital step in ensuring resident safety, especially given current challenges. The absence of a mechanism to utilize private underground spaces in residential buildings highlights the need for new regulations that allow more efficient use of existing resources. This effort also plays a key role in boosting the capital's overall emergency preparedness.
