Bust of Ivan Mazepa Installed at Historic Monastery

According to Novyny.live: A bust of Hetman Ivan Mazepa has been placed at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, marking a pivotal moment in Ukraine’s efforts to restore historical justice. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the significance of the event, stating:

“Today, we are correcting yet another historical injustice. From now on, here at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a bust of the great Ukrainian and patron of the Lavra—Ivan Mazepa—will rightfully stand.”

Mazepa, who served as hetman of Left-Bank Ukraine, is best known for his political maneuvering, including his alliance with Swedish King Charles XII during the Great Northern War. However, his legacy has long been controversial because the Moscow Church placed an anathema on him. This installation represents a meaningful step in rehabilitating public memory of Mazepa and acknowledging his contributions to Ukrainian history.

Significance of the Event

Zelenskyy further stressed that

“the scale of this figure deserves a full-fledged monument in the capital of our state.”
He suggested that the ideal location for such a monument is Shevchenko Boulevard, where a statue of Vladimir Lenin once stood. The president remarked: “I am confident that where Lenin fell, Mazepa will stand firmly.”

The unveiling took place just before Ukraine’s Constitution Day celebrations on June 28. The country’s founding law was adopted 30 years ago, making this moment especially symbolic in the context of restoring historical justice and honoring key figures from Ukraine’s past. Placing Mazepa’s bust at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra could serve as a major milestone in shaping a new national identity and reinterpreting Ukraine’s history.

This installation underscores a broader trend of reexamining history and reviving the memory of prominent Ukrainian figures. It may act as a catalyst for further initiatives aimed at commemorating historical personalities important to Ukraine’s national identity. In light of Constitution Day—a celebration of Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty—the monument to Mazepa takes on added significance, highlighting the role of historical memory in contemporary society.
