Lviv Hosts Exhibition Honoring Belarusian Volunteers Who Died Fighting for Ukraine.
Exhibition Marks Belarusian Freedom Day in Lviv
According to UATV: An exhibition dedicated to Belarusian volunteers who lost their lives defending Ukraine has opened in Lviv to coincide with Belarusian Freedom Day. The display highlights the personal stories of these heroes, including fighters who have been involved in the conflict since 2014. Belarusian volunteers have fought alongside Ukraine for over nine years, and following Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, they united into larger military units to confront the aggressor.
Belarusian Freedom Day is observed on March 25, and the opening of this exhibition serves as a significant moment to remember the fallen. The exhibit features the stories of 28 individuals, some of whom are buried in Lviv at the Lychakiv Cemetery. Beyond honoring their military sacrifices, the exhibition also sheds light on their personal lives and backgrounds.
Personal Stories of the Fallen
Halyna, a visitor to the exhibition, recalls her husband Dmytro, who received the 'People's Hero of Ukraine' award in 2017. Tragically, Dmytro was killed in the Luhansk region in April 2022. Halyna shares:
“It’s not a state award, but it was the most precious to him.”
Halyna and Dmytro met in 2018, during a time when the war had already claimed many lives. Halyna’s brother also died in 2018 while on a combat mission. Her words—
“We met in 2018 under very tragic circumstances”—underscore how deeply the war shaped their lives. Among the exhibition’s visitors are those still fighting, as the war continues. One soldier remarked: 'I couldn’t accept this and decided to defend our honor.'
The exhibition serves as a platform to commemorate heroes who gave their lives for freedom. Alyaksey Frantskevich, one of the organizers, notes that not all heroes are represented on the posters, as most of the relatives of Belarusian fighters remain in Belarus. This event stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made in the struggle for independence and dignity, and of the need to remember those who gave everything for these values.
By honoring Belarusian volunteers who died in the war for Ukraine, the exhibition underscores the importance of mutual support between nations during difficult times. Belarusians fighting alongside Ukrainians demonstrate unwavering spirit and solidarity in the pursuit of freedom. This event has become a symbol of remembrance and tribute to those who were not afraid to sacrifice their lives for shared ideals of independence and dignity—ideals that remain deeply relevant for both peoples today. It is therefore essential not only to remember these heroes but also to continue their mission by supporting one another in the fight for a better future.
