The President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Gerry Connolly, considers the proposal of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to replace US troops in Europe with Ukrainian army units after the war "inappropriate" and "even harmful".
"It seems like a political pass to Donald Trump in case he wins the elections. And for those of us fighting for Ukraine in the US Congress, — we don't need to hear that. The US should be in Europe," — said Connolly in an interview with Radio Liberty.
He also believes that there is no need to "encourage the US to leave Europe — because it is not in the interest of Ukraine and not in the interest of allies".
"If anyone would welcome this — it would be Vladimir Putin. Because we — are a countermeasure, and our physical presence in Europe reassures partners. Well, I take this proposal as an act of generosity, but the idea itself is not productive. And at this Time it is also harmful," — said Connolly.
The total number of US troops in Europe reaches about 100,000.
