Putin seeks control over the former USSR: Peskov called the US intelligence reports unreliable.
According to ТСН: Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov commented on the information from American intelligence regarding the alleged intentions of President Vladimir Putin to bring under Moscow's control territories that once belonged to the USSR.
According to Peskov, reports about Russia's plans to restore the spheres of influence of the USSR are not true.
“Unreliable is the first thing. We have indeed seen some disparate reports on this matter, but even if it is true, it falls under the category of situations where intelligence makes some erroneous speculations and conclusions. This does not correspond to reality at all,” Peskov stated.
According to Reuters, Putin intends to completely capture Ukraine and bring back under Russia's control the territories of the former Soviet bloc, including NATO countries. European intelligence agencies and the Baltic states share these concerns, viewing themselves as potential targets of aggression.
Interestingly, previously Putin called the restoration of the USSR “absurd” and accused the West of baseless accusations of “aggression against Russia.” Despite these statements, he has repeatedly emphasized that the collapse of the USSR was the greatest tragedy of the century and asserted that the Russian Federation is its sole successor.
The situation around Ukraine continues to remain tense, and the Kremlin's comments only underline the escalation of international politics. The global community is closely monitoring the developments, as any new aggressive initiatives from Russia could significantly impact security in the region and beyond.
