Tragic Loss of a Father and Daughter in Ivano-Frankivsk: What We Know

According to TSN.ua: On March 24, a Russian drone attack in Ivano-Frankivsk claimed the lives of serviceman Volodymyr Shkrumelyak and his 15-year-old daughter Anelya. Volodymyr, a member of the 50th Regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine, was visiting the maternity hospital with his daughter to see his wife, who had recently given birth.

At the time of the strike, about a hundred people were inside the hospital. The blast wave from the drone damaged perinatal centers and nearby buildings, shattering over a hundred windows. Six others were injured in the attack, including a young child and a kindergarten employee. Volodymyr succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while his daughter Anelya died in an ambulance.

Anelya was a graduate of the Lanchyn Gymnasium, and Volodymyr had recently become a father for the second time. The staff of the Lanchyn Gymnasium expressed their condolences, stating:

“The father and daughter who died were returning from the maternity hospital. Together, they had gone to visit the mother and the newborn child.”

The attack has been described as yet another example of the enemy's 'inhuman cruelty and cynicism,' according to a statement from the 50th Regiment named after Colonel Semen Vysochan of the National Guard of Ukraine. This tragedy has dealt a heavy blow to the family and the community, underscoring the risks and consequences of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

This incident highlights the devastating toll of the armed conflict on civilians who are not directly involved in military operations. The deaths of Volodymyr and Anelya serve as a stark reminder of how war impacts families and communities, causing irreparable harm. At the same time, the response from the community and educational institutions shows how society unites in grief and supports those who have suffered losses during the war.
