Hungarians Against Orban: Who Really Supports Ukraine in Hungary.
According to inkorr.com: The head of the Society of Ukrainian Culture in Hungary, Jaroslava Khortiani, urged to avoid generalizations about all of Hungary as hostile towards Ukraine due to the actions of Prime Minister Viktor Orban. She noted that among Hungarians, including the mayor of Budapest, there are many who actively support Ukraine despite the rise of anti-Ukrainian propaganda.
Support for Ukrainians in Hungary
Khortiani also emphasized that after 2022, Hungarian society actively helped Ukrainian refugees, despite the start of an anti-Ukrainian campaign on television. She pointed out that among political scientists, calls have emerged to cut arms supplies to Ukraine and hold peace negotiations.
The head of the Society of Ukrainian Culture stressed that, despite the government's efforts to discredit Ukraine, the majority of Hungarians can distinguish between the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian government. The mayor of Budapest and most politically conscious Hungarians continue to support Ukraine.
Khortiani also noted that Russian propagandists are trying to portray Ukrainians in a negative light in Hungary. However, she expressed hope for a reduction in anti-Ukrainian rhetoric after the parliamentary elections scheduled for next April.
The attitude of Hungarian society towards Ukraine is ambiguous. The head of the Society of Ukrainian Culture in Hungary emphasized that despite anti-Ukrainian propaganda, many Hungarians express support for Ukraine and hope for change after the parliamentary elections in the country.
This statement by Khortiani appears important in the context of social and political processes in Ukraine and Hungary, as it highlights the realities of support that exist within Hungarian society despite the official position of the government. It is important for these voices to be heard, as they testify to human solidarity even in difficult conditions.
