Hungary's Fidesz Party Plans to Seize Ukrainian Assets.
Legislative Initiative of the Fidesz Party
According to TSN.ua: The Hungarian ruling party Fidesz has introduced a bill that proposes the seizure of Ukrainian millions and gold reserves. These assets had already been secured on March 6. The proposal presented by Fidesz MP Máté Kocsis was discussed in Parliament and raised concerns as it could have retroactive legal effect. A relevant committee voted in favor of the initiative with four votes for.
Ukrainian Reaction: Accusation of State Terrorism
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha reacted sharply to the Hungarian plans, labeling them as acts of state terrorism. He warned that
“Hungary is entering a spiral of lawlessness”
and emphasized,
“they are only adding lawlessness to lawlessness.”
Sybiha characterized the situation overall as 'state terrorism, extortion, and hostage-taking'.
The background of the strained relations also includes a scandal involving the arrest of Ukrainian money couriers from Oschadbank, who were held in handcuffs for 28 hours. This incident underscores the deep discord between the neighboring states and raises questions about the legality of Hungary's actions.
The current initiative of the Fidesz party further strains the already long-standing bilateral relations marked by political and economic differences. It could have serious consequences as it raises not only legal concerns but could also escalate the conflict between the two countries.
The further development remains to be seen, as the reactions of the international community and possible Ukrainian countermeasures could significantly influence the situation in the region. The tensions illustrate how the Ukraine war also affects the relationships between EU and neighboring states.
