Hungary Halts Fuel Transit to Ukraine, Demands Restart of 'Druzhba' Pipeline.
Hungary Suspends Fuel Transit to Ukraine
According to UATV: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has announced a suspension of gasoline and diesel fuel transit to Ukraine. This move is a direct response to Ukraine's failure to resume oil shipments via the 'Druzhba' pipeline, which Hungary expects to be restored within three days. This decision highlights the ongoing energy tensions in Eastern Europe, which have been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine.
Hungarian Energy Minister Gábor Czepek stated that
'until Kyiv resumes these strategic oil supplies to Hungary, we will not agree to a €90 billion loan.'He further emphasized that Hungary is prepared to initiate legal proceedings and utilize mechanisms available under European Union agreements if negotiations between the EU and Kyiv fail to produce a positive outcome.
The Critical Importance of Strategic Oil Supply
The focal point for these measures is the city of Brody in the Lviv region. Hungary's stance underscores the critical importance it places on the reliable delivery of strategic oil supplies and the fulfillment of its cooperation agreements with Ukraine.
This decision by the Hungarian government could significantly impact Ukraine's energy security, particularly given the ongoing conflict and existing restrictions on fuel imports. Restoring the 'Druzhba' pipeline's operation is crucial not only for fuel supplies but also for the broader framework of cooperation between Ukraine and the EU. The situation underscores the complex nature of energy relations in the region and the urgent need for diplomatic negotiations to ensure supply stability.
