Cash-in-Transit Vehicles Seized in Hungary

According to TSN.ua: Hungarian authorities have impounded and concealed cash-in-transit vehicles belonging to Ukraine's Oschadbank on a restricted-access site. The bank confirmed on March 6 that its staff had been detained, following the seizure of the vehicles on March 5. The incident occurred overnight on March 5-6, when the bank's couriers were apprehended while in possession of substantial amounts of cash and gold.

Seven members of the cash delivery team were in the vehicles at the time. The detained couriers were carrying tens of millions of dollars and a significant quantity of gold. Andriy Sybiha, a bank representative, stated that

"the Hungarian authorities have effectively taken seven Ukrainian citizens hostage and stolen the money."
This incident occurs against a backdrop of historically complex relations between Ukraine and Hungary, adding a diplomatic dimension to the legal dispute.

Response from Hungarian Law Enforcement

Hungary's Counter-Terrorism Centre (TEK), a special police unit under the Ministry of Interior, is currently guarding the detained couriers and investigating the circumstances of the seizure. The situation remains tense, with the next steps from Hungarian law enforcement awaiting clarification.

This incident has the potential to significantly impact relations between Ukraine and Hungary, as the detention of Ukrainian citizens and the confiscation of large sums of money is causing serious concern. Oschadbank, as one of Ukraine's leading financial institutions, may appeal to international bodies to protect its interests and the rights of its employees. The unfolding of events will depend on the response from Hungarian law enforcement and the state of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
