Cash Transport Vehicles Detained in Budapest
According to TSN.ua: Hungarian authorities in Budapest have seized two cash-in-transit vehicles belonging to Ukraine's Oschadbank. The trucks were carrying a substantial cargo of $40 million, €35 million, and 9 kilograms of gold. The seven Ukrainian bank employees accompanying the shipment were also detained, and their current status and location remain unknown. Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is demanding their immediate release.
Oschadbank formally reported the seizure of its employees and vehicles in Hungary on March 5. The incident occurred in central Budapest, where Hungarian law enforcement stopped the two bank vehicles. The presence of such a large quantity of cash and precious metals has raised serious concerns for Ukrainian officials. This event occurs against a backdrop of historically tense diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Hungary, primarily over minority rights and energy policy.
Ukrainian Demands and Official Reaction
The seven Ukrainian personnel from the detained vehicles are currently being held at an undisclosed location.
"We demand the immediate release of Ukrainian citizens from the Hungarian authorities," stated representatives of Ukraine's National Bank.In turn, commenting on the situation, Andrii Sybiha noted:
"This is state terrorism and racketeering."
Ukraine has already sent an official diplomatic note demanding the release of its citizens. There are reports suggesting the Hungarian authorities may have moved the seized vehicles to a facility belonging to the Counter-Terrorism Centre. The situation has caused significant alarm among Ukrainian officials and underscores the urgent need for a response from international bodies. The ongoing war in Ukraine adds a critical dimension to the safety of its citizens abroad.
This incident highlights the severe strain in Ukraine-Hungary relations, which could significantly impact bilateral cooperation. Attention to this case is crucial not only for safeguarding the rights of Ukrainian citizens but also for maintaining regional stability. The outcome will depend on the response from Hungarian authorities and potential intervention by international organizations to resolve the conflict.
