Hungary Seizes Ukrainian Bank's Cash Transports, Sparking Diplomatic Row Over €75 Million.
Cash Transports Seized in Hungary
According to TSN.ua: Hungarian authorities have seized two armored cash transport vehicles belonging to Ukraine's state-owned Oschadbank, detaining seven Ukrainian citizens in the process. The incident, which occurred on March 5, has escalated into a significant diplomatic dispute. The vehicles were found to contain a substantial haul of assets, including $40 million, €35 million, and 9 kilograms of gold.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the action, stating that
"the actions of Hungarian law enforcement bear all the hallmarks of state terrorism."In response, the head of Ukraine's National Bank, Andrii Pyshnyi, demanded that Hungarian authorities provide
"the immediate release of Ukrainian citizens and an official explanation for their detention."
Diplomatic Fallout and Ukraine's Response
The seized vehicles are currently being held at Hungary's Counter-Terrorism Centre. Hungarian officials have alleged the Ukrainians were involved in money laundering. Ukraine has formally protested these actions, submitting an official diplomatic note demanding the release of its citizens and advising Ukrainians to avoid travel to Hungary. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the two nations, which have a history of disputes over minority rights and energy security. The strong reaction from Kyiv underscores the potential for this event to further strain diplomatic and economic cooperation in the region.
The situation has caused serious concern within diplomatic circles of both countries, exacerbating the existing strain in Ukrainian-Hungarian relations. The Ukrainian government's firm stance indicates the gravity with which it views the seizure, seeing it as an action that could impact future bilateral relations, particularly regarding regional security and economic partnership.
