Statement from Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs

According to TSN.ua: Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, has condemned the detention of seven Ukrainian citizens in Budapest on March 5th, describing it as a hostage-taking act and a form of pre-election blackmail by Hungary. The individuals were apprehended while inside 'Oschadbank' cash-in-transit vehicles, which were carrying tens of millions in foreign currency and a significant quantity of gold bullion. The Hungarian National Tax and Customs Administration stated the detention was made on suspicion of money laundering.

Sybiha asserted that Hungary's actions resemble a hostage situation, complete with demands.

"This is what typically happens after people are taken hostage: demands are made," the minister emphasized.
He added that Ukraine will not tolerate such state-sponsored banditry, highlighting the gravity of the incident.

Ukraine's Diplomatic Response

In response to the detentions, Ukraine is preparing a diplomatic countermeasure, which may include imposing personal or state sanctions and other restrictive actions against Budapest.

"We expect a decisive reaction from our partners," Sybiha added, stressing the importance of international support in this matter.

The incident has provoked outrage within Ukrainian society and has become a topic of discussion on the international stage. Ukrainian authorities are actively working to resolve the situation, protect their citizens' interests, and secure their return home.

This event underscores the existing tensions between Ukraine and Hungary, which could affect the political climate in both nations. The detention of Ukrainian citizens under these circumstances is likely to be a subject of further diplomatic talks and may impact Ukraine's cooperation with its international partners regarding civil rights protection and security. This diplomatic friction occurs against a backdrop of historical tensions between Kyiv and Budapest over minority rights and regional policy.

Given the public outcry, Ukraine intends to intensify its diplomatic efforts to resolve this situation and safeguard its citizens abroad.
