Hungary Detains Ukrainian Cash Transporters; Kyiv Accuses Budapest of State-Sponsored Extortion.
Mounting Tensions Between Ukraine and Hungary
According to TSN.ua: A diplomatic rift between Ukraine and Hungary has deepened following an unauthorized visit by a Hungarian delegation to Kyiv and the detention of Ukrainian cash transit workers by Hungarian security forces. These incidents have resulted in the freezing of substantial Ukrainian financial assets, including $40 million, €35 million, and 9 kilograms of gold. The strained relations come at a critical time, as Hungary prepares for elections in April and both nations navigate complex energy and security issues.
The Hungarian delegation’s trip to Kyiv was ordered by the Hungarian government, which sent Deputy Energy Minister Gábor Csepek to assess the condition of the Druzhba oil pipeline. However, the visit was not coordinated with Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In response, Ukrainian officials stated that
“the proposed dates for the visit are unacceptable. We suggest that the Hungarian side coordinate new dates for the visit through diplomatic channels.”
Detention of Cash Transporters and Political Fallout
On March 5, Hungary’s anti-terrorism unit detained seven cash-in-transit workers from Ukraine’s state-owned Oschadbank, prompting a sharp rebuke from Ukrainian authorities. Andriy Sybiha described the action as
“an act of state racketeering and terrorism,”emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable. Meanwhile, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó voiced concerns, claiming that “Ukrainians are interfering in Hungary’s elections far more aggressively and seriously than ever before. What do they want?”
These events are unfolding as Hungary approaches its elections on April 12. The escalating tensions could significantly influence the political landscape in both countries, particularly regarding Hungary’s domestic politics and foreign relations. Hungary may also face scrutiny for actions that some perceive as aligning with Russian interests, though no official statements on this matter have been made.
Overall, the recent developments highlight serious challenges in Ukraine-Hungary relations, which could have lasting consequences for both nations. The situation underscores the need for diplomatic dialogue and coordinated actions, especially concerning energy security and political interests. As both countries confront internal and external pressures, finding pathways for constructive cooperation is essential to preventing further escalation of the conflict.
