Hungary's Detention of Ukrainian Cash Couriers Draws Polish Accusation of International Law Breach.
Ukrainian Cash Couriers Detained in Hungary
According to TSN.ua: Hungarian authorities have detained Ukrainian cash-in-transit personnel on suspicion of money laundering. The incident occurred on Hungarian territory, where two vehicles were found transporting substantial sums of cash—$40 million and €25 million—along with nine kilograms of gold. Hungary's National Tax and Customs Administration is currently investigating the case. This event highlights the complex financial and security challenges that have arisen in the region since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Polish Response and International Implications
Polish Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has publicly criticized the detention, labeling it a violation of international law. He stressed the necessity of adhering to international norms, stating:
“I believe this is also an important topic for discussion within the entire European Union. International law must be respected. If Russia violates international law and we protest against it, then we should not behave in the same way and cannot apply such standards.”
Kosiniak-Kamysz further suggested the detention might be linked to internal political struggles: “It seems to be part of a political battle. And perhaps fear is looking Prime Minister Orbán in the eye due to the approaching elections.”
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has demanded an explanation from Ukraine regarding the matter. The detention has sparked a sharp international reaction, and developments surrounding the incident continue to unfold. This situation underscores the heightened political tensions within the EU regarding the war in Ukraine.
The case emphasizes the critical importance of observing international norms in inter-state cooperation, particularly amid political strain. Differing interpretations of legislation and international agreements by various nations can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings. The ongoing developments in this affair may impact relations between Ukraine and Hungary, as well as the broader regional situation.
