Hungary Lifts Its Veto, Giving Ukraine a Path to Open a New EU Cluster.
Ukraine Set to Open Sixth Accession Cluster
According to UATV: Hungary has agreed not to block the opening of another cluster in Ukraine's EU accession talks, consenting to send an official letter to both Ukraine and Moldova. Specifically, Budapest has endorsed the launch of the sixth negotiation cluster, which covers common foreign and trade policy, security policy, and relations with third countries.
Despite this concession, Hungary still refuses to unlock the other four clusters it has held up. The European Union is scheduled to decide on whether to open the sixth cluster on July 8. The EU's Committee of Permanent Representatives will also vote to approve the screening results for the external relations chapter. This decision could shape the next steps in Ukraine's European integration process.
Why This Cluster Matters
Opening the sixth cluster is a significant milestone for Ukraine on its path to EU membership, as it allows discussions on critical foreign and trade policy issues. However, the continued blockade of the other four clusters shows that Hungary is still leveraging its veto power to influence EU enlargement dynamics.
The EU's ruling on July 8 could have a major impact on the future trajectory of Ukraine-EU relations.
