Forging a 'Steel Hedgehog': Ukraine's Push for Self-Reliant Defense.
Building a 'Steel Hedgehog': Ukraine's Strategy for National Security
According to TSN.ua: Amid uncertainty over security guarantees from its partners, Ukraine is focusing on strengthening its own defensive capabilities. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has urged Kyiv to transform the country into a 'steel hedgehog,' a concept emphasizing that Ukraine's armed forces must become the core of its security. This highlights the critical importance of military strength in the face of contemporary threats, as the nation cannot rely solely on external promises.
Kyiv insists on maintaining its armed forces at a strength of 800,000 service members. This drive for self-reliance marks a significant shift from 1994, when Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal in exchange for security assurances from the United States and the United Kingdom. With the security landscape now altered, the country is compelled to find new ways to bolster its defenses. In a notable development, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated on February 3 that the potential deployment of alliance troops to Ukraine is a possibility, which could represent a major step in supporting regional security.
Modern Challenges and Defense Cooperation
Kyiv has already outlined an agreement to acquire up to 150 Saab JAS-39E Gripen fighter jets, a move that will modernize its air force. Meanwhile, Russia's losses are estimated at approximately 35,000 personnel per month, underscoring the intense and ongoing nature of the conflict. Ukraine's defense industry possesses a production capacity valued at around $35 billion, yet only about $12 billion has been financed, pointing to a pressing need for additional resources to sustain its defense readiness.
Furthermore, the European Union plans to provide Ukraine with a €90 billion loan, with two-thirds of the funds earmarked for defense. Alona Hetmanchuk emphasized this focus:
'The core of any security guarantees must be the Armed Forces of Ukraine and its defense industry.'This statement reflects the country's determination to develop its own defense infrastructure in a climate of global instability.
Mykhailo Fedorov reinforced this intent:
'Our goal is to transform the system: to carry out military reform and improve infrastructure on the front lines.'This signals Ukraine's commitment to actively enhancing its military capabilities to achieve greater independence in ensuring its own security.
With external security guarantees in doubt, Ukraine has no choice but to forge its own path to defense, making its current efforts both urgent and essential. The country's situation is a stark example of how nations are being forced to reassess their security strategies in an increasingly volatile world. Its push to bolster military power and deepen defense cooperation with international partners demonstrates a drive for greater autonomy, a trend with significant implications for regional stability and future geopolitical alignments.
