Ukraine Targets 2027 for EU Readiness: Zelenskyy Outlines Key Timeline and Strategy.
Ukraine's Path to European Union Membership
According to UATV: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declared that Ukraine aims to be technically prepared for European Union accession by 2027. He stated that the country must complete the primary steps required for EU membership by the end of 2026. Zelenskyy emphasized that joining the EU is a crucial security guarantee not only for Ukraine but for the whole of Europe. This ambitious timeline comes as Ukraine continues its broader geopolitical pivot towards Western institutions.
Defense Cooperation with Poland
As part of its preparation for EU integration, Ukraine is collaborating with Poland on modernizing military equipment, specifically MiG-29 fighter jets. Poland already transferred MiG-29s to Ukraine in 2023 and plans to provide approximately nine more of these aircraft. Furthermore, a contract for developing a new anti-drone system, named San, was signed in Poland on January 30, which is also part of efforts to bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities. This military partnership underscores the deep strategic ties between the two nations.
Looking ahead, Lithuania's upcoming presidency of the EU Council, set to begin in the first half of 2027, could influence the process of Ukraine's accession to the European Union. During discussions on the membership topic, Andrii Sybiha noted:
“The accession date is a complex issue.” - Andrii Sybiha
Nevertheless, various experts highlight that Ukraine's EU membership is a vital step for ensuring regional security. For instance, Paula Pinho stressed that it serves as a security guarantee. Donald Tusk added that securing the eastern border is an important task for the security of Poland and Europe as a whole.
President Zelenskyy's announcement regarding Ukraine's target for technical readiness to join the EU by 2027 reinforces the nation's commitment to European integration, a priority intensified by ongoing security challenges in the region. The defense cooperation with Poland on modernizing military hardware also points to the strategic goal of strengthening Ukraine's resilience, which is necessary for upholding European values and standards. These efforts bolster Ukraine's standing within European institutions, particularly in view of the forthcoming Lithuanian EU presidency, which may become a significant factor in the accession process.
