Ukraine considers the possibility of purchasing Italian air defense systems
On January 11, 2025, a meeting took place between representatives of the Italian Defense Industry Agency and the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Brigadier General Anatoliy Klochk. One of the main topics discussed was the use of frozen Russian assets to acquire Italian air defense systems and munitions. Ukraine has already received the advanced Samp/T air defense system from Italy, which significantly improved the country's defensive capabilities.
According to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, these funds may be used to purchase necessary military equipment. There was also consideration of obtaining additional Italian-made air defense systems, including Samp/T, along with munitions.
Ukraine has already cooperated with Italy in the field of air defense systems. Italy supplied Ukraine with SkyGuard Aspide and Spada air defense systems, which were delivered in February 2023 and significantly enhanced Ukraine's ability to counter aerial threats. SkyGuard Aspide protects at close ranges, while the Spada system operates at medium ranges. Both systems are critical components of Ukraine's defense capabilities.
