Talks in Abu Dhabi to Bring Ukraine, US, and Russia to the Table.
Three-Way Talks Set for March
According to UATV: A trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia is scheduled for March 5-6 in Abu Dhabi. These discussions are a significant diplomatic effort to address the ongoing war. The primary agenda items will include:
- security guarantees for Ukraine;
- the issue of territorial control;
- potential concessions from Russia.
However, the venue may be shifted to Turkey or Switzerland.
Preparatory Discussions and Stances
In preparation, Ukrainian and American delegations held talks in Geneva in late February, emphasizing the critical importance of security guarantees. A bilateral security agreement between Ukraine and the U.S. is reportedly finalized and ready for signing. The matter of territorial control, however, remains a complex point of contention.
“When we talk about border territories, any of them — it is very difficult for the enemy to hold them.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
He has also categorically rejected the possibility of Ukrainian Armed Forces withdrawing from Donetsk, stressing that “Russia needs to end its aggression against us — against Ukraine, against all of Europe. And security must be guaranteed.”
Moscow, for its part, has expressed readiness to withdraw its troops from the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Dnipropetrovsk regions in exchange for a Ukrainian withdrawal from Donetsk. Notably, in previous negotiations, the Russian side explicitly stated it would “accept the security guarantees the U.S. is offering Ukraine,” as noted by Kyrylo Budanov.
Thus, the trilateral talks aim not only to discuss security matters but also to create conditions for a potential conflict settlement. The outcomes of these meetings are expected to significantly influence the future trajectory of the situation in the region.
These negotiations represent a crucial stage in the search for a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, highlighting the efforts of international partners to ensure regional stability. Their success or failure could shape the subsequent actions of all participants, and the results will be closely monitored both within Ukraine and abroad. For a lasting peace, a willingness to compromise from all sides will be essential.
