Sweden and Ukraine Ink Deal for 16 Gripen E Fighters: Delivery Timeline Revealed.
Gripen E Procurement Agreement Signed
According to UATV: On June 30, 2023, Sweden and Ukraine finalized a contract for the purchase of 16 multirole Gripen E fighter jets. This deal marks a major milestone in strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities, as it also includes the provision of 16 Gripen C/D aircraft as military aid, with the first deliveries expected in early 2027. The newer Gripen E models are scheduled to arrive at the start of 2029.
Funding and Training Arrangements
The acquisition will be financed through a European Union loan, backed by the United Kingdom. Preparations are already underway in Ukraine to train pilots and technical personnel for operating the new aircraft. Under prior agreements, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on May 28, 2023, that the country is set to receive a total of 22 Gripen fighters by 2030.
Swedish official Paul Jonson described the decision to supply Gripen jets as 'a turning point for the concept of the Ukrainian Air Force.'
President Zelenskyy emphasized that 'together with Sweden, we continue to strengthen Ukrainian combat aviation,' adding that 'Sweden fully supports Ukraine's European integration.' These remarks highlight the deepening security and defense partnership between the two nations.
This agreement signals a new phase in military cooperation between Ukraine and European countries, underscoring the commitment of international allies to bolster Ukraine's defensive posture. It also reflects Ukraine's drive to align with European security frameworks, a crucial factor amid ongoing regional threats. The collaboration with Sweden could serve as a model for other nations willing to assist Ukraine in enhancing its military strength and stability.
