Ukraine will lose millions of people: what 'peace' on Russian terms would actually mean.
Ukraine seeks peace on its own terms, but Russia wants it on its own terms, meaning the absence of Ukraine itself.
This is written in an article for The Hill by Adrian Bonenberger, a US Army veteran and writer.
According to the author, those not directly involved in the conflict can be divided into two camps - pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian.
"Imposing Russian peace on Ukraine through diplomacy would lead to two main consequences. First, about 4 million Ukrainian refugees currently in Europe and the US would remain there, instead of returning home to a country that is unprotected from Russian invasion. Second, a massive outflow of Ukrainians would begin. This would comprise at least several million people - Ukrainians who participated in military operations against Russia, as well as their families, politicians, journalists, volunteers, and civil servants who worked for an independent and free Ukraine, and their families. There's a likelihood that more people would also leave. They would flee to Europe and America. Only the most patriotic and fearless Ukrainians would remain in unprotected Ukraine. In other words, peace on Russian terms would mean that about 8-12 million (or possibly even more) Ukrainians would either stay in Europe and the US or flee there without hope of return," Bonenberger noted.
According to the author, the democratic tandem of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz has not announced a viable plan to support Ukraine in its defense that would push Russia out and ensure justice for its invasion. He argues that the Republican tandem also lacks a plan that would end the war without taking millions of lives and destabilizing Europe and the US.
"It's easy to say 'this is not our problem,' but even if you say so, adding 1% to the population of Europe and the US in a month or witnessing the genocide of Ukrainians will still affect us. Those who seek peace on Russian terms must explain how this is possible in reality - more than just words. For the 70% of Americans who seek peace on Ukraine's terms, it is important to hear how Harris and Walz plan to achieve this," he emphasized.
