'Warriors of Science' Documentary Premiere

According to UATV: A documentary film titled 'Warriors of Science,' which follows Ukrainian polar scientists conducting research expeditions while their nation is at war, will premiere on Ukrainian television channels on February 7 at 22:20. The film marks the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's only polar research base, the 'Akademik Vernadsky' station. This Antarctic program is a point of significant national pride and international scientific cooperation.

The 'Akademik Vernadsky' Research Station

Ukraine acquired the 'Akademik Vernadsky' station from the United Kingdom under a memorandum signed in 1995, with the formal handover of the former 'Faraday' station occurring on February 6, 1996. During the 1990s, several nations, including South Korea, expressed interest in the base, but the UK ultimately selected Ukraine. As noted by the renowned polar explorer Yevhen Dykyi:

'Britain chose Ukraine, not wealthy Korea, solely because of the unique expertise of our polar scientists. Money could not buy the intellectual capital we possessed.'

The film 'Warriors of Science' won the 'Best Directing' award at the Cinema for Victory festival and had its initial broadcast on the 'Dim' channel in the summer. Yevhen Dykyi also emphasized the stark contrast between the two worlds in which Ukraine's Antarctic program now exists:

'This film is the first to show the two utterly opposite worlds the Ukrainian Antarctic program has inhabited for the last three years. The first is Antarctica itself—a world of global science, progress, international cooperation, pristine nature, and unique beauty. The second is a full-scale war, where our polar scientists are defending Ukraine.'

Therefore, the broadcast of 'Warriors of Science' represents a key moment in highlighting the work of Ukrainian polar researchers and their dual contribution to science and national defense during a tumultuous period. The film not only underscores the importance of their scientific mission but also demonstrates their unwavering dedication to their homeland, illustrating the vital role of science in society, especially during crises. Such initiatives help raise awareness of Ukraine's Antarctic program and its value to the global community.
