Rare Winter Formations: Ukrainian Researchers Document Snow Donuts and Ice Pancakes in Antarctica.
Unusual Winter Phenomena Observed in Antarctica
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian scientists stationed at the 'Akademik Vernadsky' research base have documented a series of rare winter formations in Antarctica. Among these are so-called 'snow donuts' and 'ice pancakes,' named for their resemblance to baked goods. These phenomena are of significant scientific interest as they require very specific and precise conditions to form.
How Snow Donuts and Ice Pancakes Are Created
The formation of snow donuts, also known as snow rollers, is a rare meteorological event. It requires two distinct layers of snow with specific properties:
- The bottom layer must be icy and hard.
- The top layer needs to be wet and loose.
Air temperatures must be slightly above freezing (0°C), and a sufficiently strong wind is necessary to sculpt the snow into these cylindrical shapes. These conditions are a delicate balance, making the sighting a noteworthy event for polar researchers.
Ice pancakes, on the other hand, are circular slabs of ice that can range from 30 centimeters to several meters in diameter. They form in turbulent water where waves and slushy ice grind their edges into a smooth, round shape. These formations can either melt or freeze into a solid, elastic ice crust known to glaciologists as nilas. The scientists also noted related formations, stating:
"Snow cornices build up on mountains or glacier edges, while ice necklaces are created by the interaction of meltwater and wind."
Observing these unique winter features provides valuable new insights into the natural processes of Antarctica and its climatic characteristics. Studying such phenomena helps scientists better understand environmental and ecosystem changes in the region, which is increasingly crucial in the context of global warming and broader environmental shifts.
