Ukraine's Southern Counteroffensive: How the Liberation of 400+ Square Kilometers Disrupted Russian Strategy.
Territorial Gains and Russian Army Losses
According to UATV: In the last six weeks, Ukraine's defense forces have successfully retaken over 400 square kilometers of territory in the country's south, significantly complicating Russian military plans. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian units have 'quite successfully restored control over approximately 400-435 square kilometers.' This demonstrates the sustained activity of Ukrainian forces in both defending and liberating occupied lands. This advance represents a notable shift in momentum on a critical front.
According to data, the Russian army has suffered substantial casualties, with over 450,000 soldiers killed or wounded. Despite Russia's attempts to seize more territory, it managed to capture less than 1% of Ukraine's total land area in 2025. As of now, Ukraine maintains control of roughly 6,000 square kilometers in the Donetsk region. President Zelenskyy also emphasized that
"the Russians are not abandoning the war and here, in the Donetsk region, are preparing for a spring offensive."
Activity of Ukrainian Special Units
Furthermore, over a three-month period, Ukrainian special forces eliminated more than 300 Russian military personnel. As noted by Pavlo Palisa,
"it will be very difficult for them to do this, and it will not be as quick as they want,"highlighting the complexity of Russian military plans. Meanwhile, Friedrich Merz stressed that 'we are not ready to accept an agreement signed without our participation,' underscoring Ukraine's resolve to continue the fight for its territories and its stance on diplomatic processes.
These events highlight the critical importance of proactive Ukrainian military actions in defense and liberation efforts, while also pointing to the protracted nature of the conflict. The growing amount of territory being reclaimed could influence the future military strategies of both sides, as well as diplomatic initiatives requiring international community involvement. It is also crucial to consider that despite these successes, Russia continues to prepare for new offensives, demanding constant defensive readiness from Ukraine. The situation underscores that battlefield gains, while significant, do not yet signal an end to hostilities.
