Air conditioning in Ukrainian Railways trains

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine is currently experiencing a heatwave, making travel uncomfortable for passengers on trains that lack air conditioning. Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) has explained why it is not feasible to equip every carriage with cooling systems.

This week, the country is facing unusually high temperatures. For travelers in cars without air conditioning or ventilation, the heat creates significant discomfort. Many older passenger coaches were never designed to accommodate air conditioning systems.

Challenges of modernization

Retrofitting older cars with air conditioning requires extensive modifications. These include:

  • redesigning the electrical power system,
  • upgrading the high-voltage equipment,
  • altering the car’s structural design.

The cost of refurbishing a single carriage runs into millions of hryvnias. These factors slow down the modernization process and limit Ukrainian Railways’ ability to provide comfortable travel conditions during hot weather.

The lack of air conditioning on Ukrainian Railways highlights the broader issue of aging infrastructure and the urgent need to modernize the country’s rail transport. As global warming makes heatwaves more common, passenger comfort becomes an increasingly pressing concern. Ukrainian Railways should explore investment in new technologies that could improve the travel experience, especially during the summer months.
