Dietitians Warn: Holiday Drinks May Harm Bone Health

According to ТСН: Festive drinks that we tend to associate with the cold season and holiday celebrations can negatively impact our bone health. Dietitians particularly highlight the high sugar content in popular seasonal drinks such as hot chocolate, eggnog, sweet coffee lattes, and mulled wine.

Impact of Sugar on Bone Health

Excessive sugar consumption can adversely affect bone tissue. Bones serve important functions in the body, including supporting the body, protecting internal organs, storing calcium, and ensuring the presence of bone marrow. Loss of bone density increases the risk of fractures and the development of osteoporosis.

Nutritionist and medical consultant Kezia Joy explains that 'a large amount of sugar can indirectly harm bones.' She also notes that excess sweetness promotes the excretion of calcium from the body, reducing the amount necessary to maintain bone density. Frequent fluctuations in blood sugar levels can disrupt the functioning of vitamin D, which is necessary for the effective absorption of calcium from food.

Although studies on the relationship between high blood glucose levels and the functioning of vitamin D are currently scarce, experiments on animals in 2022 suggest a possible link between vitamin D deficiency and impaired regulation of blood sugar levels. Regular consumption of sweet drinks during the holiday season may exacerbate this effect.

Negative Consequences of Excessive Sugar Consumption

The expert also emphasizes the role of chronic inflammation, which can develop from excessive sugar intake. Over time, this inflammation can disrupt the processes of bone remodeling, negatively affecting their strength. Therefore, specialists recommend consuming sweet products and drinks in moderation.

'Therefore, it is extremely important to consume high-calorie and sugar-rich products only in moderation during the holiday season,' the consultant stated.

Composition of Drinks and Their Effects

Dietitian Hannah Anderson emphasizes that the impact of festive drinks on bone health depends on their composition. Hot chocolate made with milk contains calcium, which can help offset the negative effects of sugar. However, ready-made cocoa mixes often have 20-30 grams of sugar per serving, which diminishes the drink's benefits.

Eggnog, according to Anderson, is particularly calorie-dense due to the combination of sugar and saturated fats—one cup can contain over 300 calories and more than 20 grams of sugar. Mulled wine and cider contain antioxidants but also alcohol and added sugar, which can impair calcium absorption. Festive coffee drinks, such as peppermint mochas or ginger lattes, can contain over 50 grams of sugar in large servings.

Experts also remind about the recommendations of the American Heart Association to limit added sugar intake to 6% of daily caloric intake. For men, this is about 36 grams, and for women, about 25 grams per day. Specialists advise paying attention to the added sugar content and, if possible, choosing less sweet beverage options to reduce the risk to bone health.

Considering holiday traditions, it is important to be cautious in your choice of drinks. The high sugar content in favorite beverages can threaten not only the enjoyment of taste but also overall health. Amid the holiday delights, it is essential to remember about balance and to take care of one's well-being to enjoy the festivities without negative health consequences.
