Ukraine Races to Repair Power Grid Ahead of New Cold Snap.
Power Grid Repairs Intensify as Temperatures Drop
According to UATV: With another wave of freezing weather approaching, the Ukrainian government is accelerating repairs to its national power grid and boosting its own energy generation capacity. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced these measures on February 1, 2023. The government is prioritizing the restoration of critical energy infrastructure as temperatures fall across the country. This work is part of a continuous effort to rebuild and protect the energy network following widespread damage.
Infrastructure Upgrades and New Capacity
Specialists have completed repairs on a high-voltage power line connecting Ukraine and Moldova, adding 500 megawatts of capacity to the national grid. Significant improvements have also been made in the Kyiv region:
- A 1.5 MW generation unit has been activated.
- Another 1 MW unit is expected to be launched soon.
- Approximately 4.5 MW of new capacity was added in the Kyiv region during January 2023 alone.
These steps are crucial for maintaining a stable electricity supply in Ukraine, especially during winter when demand spikes due to heating needs. Restoring infrastructure and adding new generation capacity will help reduce the risk of power outages, which is vital for both the population and the country's industry.
“We are ramping up the pace of installing co-generation units,” stated Denys Shmyhal, emphasizing the importance of accelerating work in this area.
The government continues to implement measures to ensure the stability of the energy system throughout the winter freeze.
