The government is preparing an update to the law on the church: what will change for believers.
Discussion on harmonizing relations between the state and the church
According to inkorr.com: The State Service for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience has started discussions on improving relations between state structures and the church. As noted by the head of the service, Viktor Yelensky, the legislation regulating state-church relations was adopted back in 1991 and needs to be updated in light of the changes that have occurred in Ukraine since then.
"Practically no key moment in the history of our Independence has been marked by the active participation of Ukrainian churches. The All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations has transformed into a unique space not only for interconfessional interaction but also for state-church cooperation over almost 30 years of its existence. Thus, we can already speak of a real model of cooperation between the state and religious organizations," Yelensky explained.
Consultations with experts
To substantiate the new model of cooperation, the State Service held consultations with experts, representatives of religious organizations, government officials, and scholars. Yelensky pointed out that not a single one of the 19 European countries where the principle of separation of church and state operates faces problems in this area.
Proposals for cooperation
He expressed ideas for creating a partnership model between the state and the church, as well as the need to amend legislation to improve cooperation in various directions. A decision was recently made regarding the status of certain churches in Ukraine, including the Kyiv Metropolis and the Moscow Church.
The Ukrainian State Service for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience is actively working on implementing a new model of partnership between the state and the church, emphasizing the importance of this cooperation in modern society. Such a step could provide an important foundation for further dialogue between the church and the state, which, in turn, would contribute to strengthening social stability in Ukraine.
