The European Commission reacted to the law restricting NABU and SAP.

The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Olha Stefanishyna, expressed her concern regarding the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of draft law No. 12414, which restricts the activities of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office. According to her, this is a backward step in the fight against corruption.

Olha Stefanishyna noted in her social media post: 'I am seriously concerned about today's vote in the Rada. The dismantling of key guarantees that protect the independence of NABU is a serious backward step.'

The Commissioner emphasized that institutions fighting corruption are of great importance for Ukraine to continue its path towards the European Union.

'The rule of law is one of the key conditions for joining the EU', she stressed.

Reaction of the European Commission and the Deputy

Speaking on behalf of the European Commission, Jean-Michel Mercier also supported the independence of NABU and SAP in his statement.

Later, Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak explained what the mentioned draft law entails: non-compliance with the instructions of the Prosecutor General may lead to the transfer of the case to other hands.
