Odessa Petition Seeks to Replace Pushkin Statue with Monument to TV Host Anton Ptushkin.
Proposal for an Odessa Monument
According to Novyny.live: A petition has been submitted to the Odessa City Council website, calling for the city's monument to Alexander Pushkin to be replaced with one honoring Ukrainian TV presenter and filmmaker Anton Ptushkin. The petition's author, Serhiy Hnezdilov, launched the signature drive in January. However, as of now, it has garnered support from only five individuals, far short of the one thousand signatures required for official consideration by the council.
Honoring Cultural Figures
In the petition, Hnezdilov argues that Ptushkin merits recognition for his contributions to cinema and for promoting Ukraine's image internationally. He has also expressed a willingness to partially fund the statue's transformation if municipal budget resources are unavailable. This is not the first proposal to replace the Pushkin monument; a previous petition suggested erecting a statue of former U.S. President Donald Trump in its place.
These initiatives highlight an ongoing public debate in Ukraine over which historical and cultural figures should be commemorated in public spaces. Discussions about monuments often reflect deeper societal shifts, particularly in the context of national identity and contemporary values. The proposal concerning the Pushkin statue is part of this broader conversation about cultural heritage and recognition in modern Ukraine.
