A unique artifact of the Roman Empire was rescued in Odessa: what item was it.
According to inkorr.com: A unique artifact of the Roman Empire has been saved from illegal sale in Odessa. This item, listed on an online auction for 40 thousand hryvnias, will be transferred to a museum for further study, as reported by 'Glavkom' citing the Odessa regional prosecutor's office.
It is known that the attempt to sell the artifact was made by a resident of Odessa through the online auction. Maksym Levada from the National Museum of History of Ukraine noted that this lace overlay with the inscription 'VICTOR I UTERE FELIX' is associated with the military culture of the 2nd–3rd centuries of the Roman Empire. After identifying the seller and seizing the artifact, an expertise is being conducted to confirm its authenticity and cultural value.
The prosecutor's office emphasizes that this is already the second successful case of cooperation between archaeologists and prosecutors in the fight against the illegal sale of valuable historical artifacts. Earlier, a fibula from the 1st–2nd centuries, associated with the Marcomannic wars of the Roman Empire, was saved, which was listed at an auction for 170 thousand hryvnias.
Conclusion
A unique artifact of the Roman Empire was rescued in Odessa from illegal sale and will be transferred to a museum for further study. This case highlights the importance of collaboration between archaeologists and law enforcement in protecting Ukraine's cultural heritage. The call to protect historical values remains relevant, as similar artifacts are an integral part of our history.
