Stiffer Fines and a New Penalty Points System

According to Novyny.live: Volodymyr Kreydenko, Deputy Head of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, has announced a proposed crackdown on speeding. Under the plan, current fines—set at just 170 or 340 hryvnias—could see significant increases, while a penalty points system may be introduced for repeat offenders. This comes as Ukraine grapples with the highest road fatality rate in Europe, prompting urgent calls for reform.

Kreydenko also raised the possibility of implementing a driver demerit points program. Motorists who habitually break traffic laws would face not only monetary penalties but also accumulate points.

“If you are a repeat offender, in addition to the fine, you will receive a penalty point,” said Volodymyr Kreydenko.

Broad Political Support and a Push for Driver Education

An estimated 70% of lawmakers are ready to back the initiative, though the draft bill introducing the points system has yet to advance. Kreydenko stressed that road safety education must become a mandatory part of the school curriculum, stating,

“Traffic rules must be part of the educational process.”

He argues that Ukraine should adopt standard European practices for traffic management. These proposed changes could serve as a critical step toward reducing accident rates and holding drivers more accountable on the country’s roads.

The legislative overhaul, targeting both higher fines and a points system, is designed to combat the alarming number of traffic fatalities. By tightening penalties and introducing behavioral tracking, authorities hope to curb reckless driving and improve overall road safety across Ukraine.
