Over 130 thousand veterans have disabilities: how rehabilitation is organized in Ukraine

According to inkorr.com: In Ukraine, there are more than 130 thousand veterans with disabilities due to the war. Deputy Minister for Veterans Affairs Ruslan Prykhodko emphasized that this figure covers various groups of disabilities caused by injuries, traumas, and concussions sustained during combat.

'Today, there are over 130 thousand veterans with disabilities due to the war in Ukraine – from different groups, caused by various types of injuries, health damage, traumas, concussions, and disabilities.'

Ruslan Prykhodko also drew attention to the problem of vision impairments among veterans. Although the exact number of individuals with vision impairments is unknown, more than 18 thousand cases were identified in 2023.

'Non-government organizations working with veterans who have complete or partial vision loss report a very high percentage of such cases.'

The Importance of Proper Rehabilitation for Veterans

He explained that the changing conditions of combat have significantly affected the nature of injuries sustained by military personnel. Therefore, it is extremely important to organize rehabilitation properly, especially for those who have lost their sight.

'When it comes to veterans with complete vision loss, it is critically important to correctly organize the work with the patient at the initial stage – to teach them basic self-care skills during the acute phase and during rehabilitation. Subsequently, this work should continue systematically.'

According to statistics, it is necessary to develop specialized rehabilitation programs for veterans with different types of disabilities to address the challenges faced by healthcare and social security systems during periods of conflict.

Thus, the issue of disability among war veterans in Ukraine is serious, and the rehabilitation of individuals with vision impairments requires special attention. The development of specialized rehabilitation programs is essential for improving the health of veterans affected during military actions.
