Food Banking System Set to Roll Out Across Ukraine

According to Novyny.live: A new food banking system is being introduced in Ukraine, designed to channel unsold food products to socially vulnerable groups. The Ministry of Economy and the Ukrainian Federation of Banks have signed a memorandum to draft the necessary legislation for this project.

Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture Taras Vysotskyi reports that Ukraine discards roughly 2.5 to 2.7 million tons of food annually. This waste is particularly concerning given that over 12.7 million people in the country rely on humanitarian aid. The food banking initiative is seen as a critical step in addressing food waste, which costs the nation approximately 9.6 billion hryvnias each year.

Phased Implementation of the Food Banking Plan

In the initial phase, up to half of unsold products will be redistributed, with the goal of reaching 80% later on. This effort requires passing a law on 'Food Banks' and revising tax regulations. Additional measures include tax incentives for businesses and mandatory requirements for large retail chains to donate leftover food. These actions could significantly cut down on the disposal of edible goods that could otherwise benefit society.

“Introducing food banking in Ukraine could be a major step toward boosting corporate social responsibility and reducing food waste.” — Taras Vysotskyi

The program aims not only to support the most vulnerable but also to curb economic losses tied to food disposal. It may also strengthen partnerships between government bodies and the private sector in advancing social responsibility.
