Ukraine Overhauls Speeding Fines: New Penalties Based on How Fast and How Often You Break the Law.
How Ukraine's Updated Speeding Penalties Will Work
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine is preparing to roll out a revamped speeding fine system that ties penalty amounts to both the severity of the violation and the driver's history of offenses. Under the proposed rules, motorists caught exceeding the limit by more than 20 km/h would face a fine of 680 hryvnias. If the speed surpasses the limit by over 40 km/h, the penalty jumps to 2,040 hryvnias. For exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 km/h, drivers would pay 2,720 hryvnias, while those caught driving over 80 km/h above the limit would be fined 3,400 hryvnias.
Key Features of the New Fine Structure
A major focus of the updated system is on repeat offenders. Drivers who exceed the speed limit by 60 or 80 km/h five or more times within a single year would face a significantly elevated fine of 17,000 hryvnias. Additionally, a 50% discount would be available for fines paid within 10 days, but only for violations where the speed exceeded the limit by no more than 40 km/h.
The introduction of this new fine system reflects the Ukrainian government's effort to reduce road accidents and increase driver accountability.
These proposed changes have not yet been enacted and still require formal legislation to become law. Until the relevant legal framework is approved, the current fine structure remains in effect. Because the penalties will now depend on the frequency of offenses, the system is designed to encourage stricter compliance with traffic regulations. Once the law is passed, these new rules could mark a significant step forward in reforming road safety across Ukraine.
