In Lviv, the first 5G network in Ukraine has been launched: when the technology will appear in other cities.
According to ТСН: The first pilot launch of the 5G network in Ukraine took place in Lviv, which is a preparatory stage for its further implementation across the country.
Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov reported that the main advantage of 5G is the ultra-high data transfer speed, which during testing reached about 500 Mbps for a single user.
Where 5G expansion is planned
Lviv was chosen not by chance, as the city becomes a technological testbed for working out all technical and security aspects of the upcoming national launch.
“The city has one of the highest rates of 5G-ready smartphones penetration in Ukraine. Currently, over 20 5G base stations have been built in Lviv,” the message states.
After the testing is completed and approved by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the expansion of the pilot project is planned. According to the preliminary schedule:
in January, 5G is expected to be turned on in Borodyanka;
in February – in Kharkiv;
next – in other cities of the country.
In the Ministry of Digital Transformation, it is noted that the development of electronic communications is one of the key areas of state policy. The full launch of 5G in Ukraine was planned for 2022, but due to the full-scale invasion of Russia, these plans were postponed for security reasons.
However, work on the technology continued, and this launch was the result of joint efforts of state structures, business, and military, who developed a safe testing model.
The Ministry emphasizes that despite the constant attacks from Russia on the infrastructure, the country continues to update and develop it, focusing efforts on the most modern technologies.
“The launch of the 5G pilot is a clear signal to the world that Ukraine is moving towards the future,” Fedorov concluded.
Earlier, Fedorov announced the launch of 5G in two cities of Ukraine, leaving the intrigue around the exact locations.
“Very soon, within a few weeks we will already launch 5G for these cities, or rather parts of these cities. And this will be the first important step that will further scale,” Fedorov stressed.
It should also be noted that the expansion of such projects during large-scale war is a challenging task.
The launch of 5G in Lviv symbolizes not only technical progress but also Ukraine's resilience in wartime. This is an important step towards modernizing communication infrastructure, which can significantly improve the quality of communication and provide new opportunities for businesses and citizens. Given the events, there will be even more such initiatives when the situation stabilizes.
