A unique mushroom discovered in the Carpathians: why it is at risk of extinction

According to inkorr.com: A rare mushroom Porpolomopsis calyptriformis was found in the Carpathians, near the village of Putyla in Bukovina. This species is included in the third edition of the Red Book of Ukraine in the 'Rare' category. The information about the discovery was provided by the National Nature Park 'Chere mo s'kyi'.

This mushroom is protected in many European countries due to the threat of extinction, and according to the 'IUCN Red List', it has been classified as 'Vulnerable'.

'In Ukraine, it is encountered very rarely, and it does not even have its own name – we use the Latin terminology,' noted the National Nature Park.

Porpolomopsis calyptriformis is not an edible mushroom, which explains its low popularity among mushroom pickers.

Mushroom season in Ukraine

The mushroom season in Ukraine lasts almost the whole year, but August and September are considered the best months for mushroom picking when various species are available on the market. It is worth remembering that collecting mushrooms without permission is prohibited by law and can lead to fines.

Thus, the discovery of the rare mushroom Porpolomopsis calyptriformis in the Carpathians emphasizes the importance of biodiversity conservation in Ukraine. This mushroom, despite its inedibility, highlights the uniqueness of our country's natural resources and the importance of preserving rare species.
