Financial Support for Pregnant Women and New Mothers in Ukraine

According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian women are entitled to financial assistance during pregnancy and after childbirth, with the amount determined by their social insurance status. These benefits are governed by the Law of Ukraine 'On Mandatory State Social Insurance'.

Women covered by social insurance receive 100% of their average salary while on maternity leave. This support is paid in two main stages:

  • The first stage covers 70 calendar days prior to the expected delivery date.
  • The second stage lasts for 56 calendar days following the birth of the child.

Additionally, women officially recognized as victims of the Chornobyl disaster are eligible for benefits spanning 180 calendar days.

Support for Uninsured Women

For women not covered by social insurance, the benefit amount will be set at 7,000 hryvnias in 2026. Furthermore, child care assistance for the first year will be deposited into a dedicated account at Oschadbank, the state savings bank. This system aims to provide crucial financial support to mothers in need during and after pregnancy. These policies reflect Ukraine's broader social protection framework, which has evolved significantly since independence.

Consequently, Ukraine's maternity benefit program is a key component of the state's social policy, designed to support families and ensure adequate conditions for mothers and newborns. The introduction of new mechanisms, such as dedicated accounts for payments, seeks to enhance the transparency and accessibility of these funds, which could positively influence the country's demographic trends.
