Scientists have found a substance that slows down aging: it is found in dark chocolate.
According to ТСН: A study conducted by King's College London showed that dark chocolate contains theobromine—a substance that may help slow down biological aging. The study involved over 1600 participants, and researchers found that higher levels of theobromine in the blood are linked to a younger biological age.
What is biological age?
Biological age is an indicator of the body's condition, its health, and functional capabilities, as opposed to chronological age. For example, a study participant who is 45 years old could have a biological age of 35 years with a high level of theobromine.
"Our discovery shows a link between components of dark chocolate and the preservation of youth. This does not mean that one should eat more chocolate, but the research helps understand how nutrition impacts longevity," noted Professor Jordana Bell.
Properties of theobromine
Researchers also studied cocoa and caffeine, but only theobromine proved beneficial for rejuvenation. This natural compound has antioxidant properties, improves blood circulation, cognitive functions, and may lower cholesterol levels.
Dr. Rami Saad, the lead researcher, stated that the discovery "could serve as a foundation for new research on aging and the prevention of various diseases."
Which chocolate to choose?
Not all chocolate bars labeled "dark chocolate" are beneficial. Experts recommend choosing products with at least 70% cocoa without added sugar and other additives. Such products can positively affect the body and contribute to maintaining health and youth.
These results underscore the importance of choosing quality chocolate in the diet, which can have not only taste but also health benefits. Dark chocolate with high cocoa content can be a delicious addition to a healthy lifestyle.
