Confusion Over Easter Dates in Ukraine for 2026

According to Novyny.live: In 2026, Ukraine will see a split in Easter celebrations, with Orthodox and Catholic communities observing the holiday on separate days. Orthodox churches, including the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, will mark the occasion on April 12. Meanwhile, Catholics and Protestants will celebrate Easter on April 5. This discrepancy arises from the different calendar systems adopted by these denominations, a recurring issue that affects religious life in the country.

Traditions and Calendar Systems

The calculation of Easter dates is rooted in a tradition established by the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. According to these rules, Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox. In 2026, the vernal equinox will occur on March 20, with the first full moon after that date happening on April 2. Based on this, Orthodox churches will celebrate Easter on April 12, as the first 'paschal' full moon after April 3, according to the Julian calendar, will take place on April 10.

Adding to the complexity, the Julian calendar fixes the vernal equinox on March 21, which in 2026 corresponds to April 3. This further complicates the determination of the celebration date. As a result, due to differing calendar traditions, Orthodox Christians and Catholics will once again observe Easter on separate dates—a pattern seen in many years.

The divergence in Easter dates between Orthodox and Catholic communities is a significant aspect of religious life in Ukraine, reflecting the historical and cultural traditions of various denominations. It also highlights the need for inter-church dialogue to avoid confusion among the faithful. In light of this, discussions about potential ways to align celebrations may become a pressing topic in the future.
