Venice has a new island: what is known about the created lagoon.
Venice has expanded thanks to new flood barriers
The legendary city of Venice has expanded due to new flood barriers. As a result, a new island has appeared in the lagoon. The new territory not only increases the area of the city but also opens up opportunities for the development of ecological and tourism projects.
The island is located near the island of Sant'Erasmo in the lagoon of Venice. To reach it, one needs to use a private boat.
Local residents often visit the island in the summer to escape the city hustle and the tourist crowds.
Until now, the island existed only in the summer, and in winter it was hidden by sea waves. However, thanks to the new flood protection system for the lagoon, the island has become accessible year-round.
'The barrier... increases the water flow speed in the lagoon when it is open, meaning more sand arrives that helps support the island. And by raising the barrier in winter to stop the high water, the island is protected from the waves that previously eroded it,' said engineer Giovanni Cecconi, who participated in the construction of the barrier.
