Lawmakers Propose Stiffer Penalties for Traffic Violations

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada is advancing a bill that would significantly increase fines for exceeding speed limits. Titled 'On Amendments to the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses Regarding Strengthening Liability for Actions Leading to Road Injuries and Fatalities,' the legislation aims to curb dangerous driving.

Under the proposed changes, speeding penalties would rise sharply. Specifically, the fines would be as follows:

  • Exceeding the limit by more than 20 km/h – 680 hryvnias;
  • Exceeding by more than 40 km/h – 2,040 hryvnias;
  • Exceeding by more than 60 km/h – 2,720 hryvnias;
  • Exceeding by more than 80 km/h – 3,400 hryvnias.

Additionally, drivers caught speeding five or more times within a year would face a fine of 17,000 hryvnias.

Olha Vasylevska-Smahliuk, a lawmaker from the ruling Servant of the People party, supports the changes, which are designed to reduce road accidents and improve safety on Ukrainian highways.

Environmental and Safety Initiatives

Separately, the Rada has registered an initiative targeting environmental crimes, with a maximum prison sentence of 10 years. Stricter restrictions are also proposed for military conscription offices (TCC) for illegal detention, carrying a maximum term of 12 years. These efforts reflect lawmakers’ broader push to tighten accountability for offenses that threaten public safety.

Final approval of the speeding bill could dramatically alter road conditions in Ukraine, as the higher fines aim not only to punish violators but also to deter future infractions. Given the country’s traffic accident statistics, such measures may help reduce injuries and fatalities. Alongside this, the legislative focus on environmental crimes and unlawful detention underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing safety and protecting citizens’ rights across multiple areas of life.
