Sarkozy Convicted for Campaign Funding: What’s Next?.
According to ТСН: The French Supreme Court upheld the decisions of lower courts, maintaining the verdict against former president Nicolas Sarkozy in the case of illegal funding of his 2012 election campaign.
The essence of the case lies in accusations against Sarkozy's campaign headquarters, which, according to prosecutors, collaborated with the PR company Bygmalion to conceal the actual costs of the campaign. Campaign expenses amounted to around 43 million euros, nearly double the legally established limit of 22.5 million euros.
Nicolas Sarkozy, who served as president of France from 2007 to 2012, denied any criminal responsibility in this case, calling the accusations "lies".
Other Accusations
Earlier, a court in France found former president Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of conspiracy and sentenced him to five years in prison for receiving illegal funding for the 2007 election campaign from Muammar Gaddafi.
Later, the Paris Court of Appeal released Sarkozy from prison and placed him under judicial supervision, granting the prosecution's request at the hearing of the appeal from the 70-year-old former president's lawyers, who had spent nearly three weeks in jail.
This case is part of Sarkozy's prolonged legal battle, which has significant resonance in French society. The Supreme Court's verdict underscores the seriousness of the accusations faced by the former leader of the country and continues to draw attention to his political activities and their consequences.
